Composites debuted in a commercial aircraft engine 20 years ago when GE Aviation introduced the GE90, which featured first-of-its-kind carbon fiber fan blades. Since then, composites have steadily worked their way into more structures, including fan surrounds, nacelles and other components. In addition to what Dallas offers visitors – easy airline access, plus excellent dining, shopping, and entertainment options – it’s also a leading business city with ties to the composites and advanced manufacturing community. Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the Dallas area include Exxon Mobil, Southwest Airlines, and Texas Instruments. Aerospace and defense contractors have a presence in the area as well, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Bell Helicopter. Plus, many area universities have strong engineering programs and others specifically focused on composites and advanced materials.
