CAMX Connection – Preforming Grows Up

Preforming Grows Up

Preforming — the process of preparing reinforcements used to mold 3D parts — is in high demand and evolving quickly to meet the needs of high-volume industrial manufacturing processes. Automation and innovation are key. More.

All Aboard the Sailing Yacht A!

In the world of marine construction, composites have been the premier, preferred material for decades due to their light weight. Keeping weight down is a critical goal when building any vessel, especially when you’re creating a boat with three masts each taller than Big Ben. Back in May, Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko became the owner of that boat.

Known as “Sailing Yacht A,” the $450 million yacht features three carbon fiber masts that are each more than 300 feet tall.

The vessel was designed by French designer Philippe Starck, who also produced Steve Jobs’ yacht “Venus.” Dirk Kloosterman, who helped design Larry Ellison’s boat “Rising Sun,” was the project leader. The freestanding masts were manufactured by Magma Structures in Portsmouth, UK. Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully-automated carbon fiber/taffeta full-roach sails.

The masts are believed to be the largest freestanding composite structures in the world, and the largest of any yacht. They are able to withstand twice the weight of a commercial Boeing Dreamliner wing. In North America, perhaps the closest structure that matches that magnitude is Apple’s “Campus 2” – which features the largest freestanding carbon fiber roof.

In addition to the strength it receives from carbon fiber, the yacht is encased in bomb-proof glass and features 40 security cameras. The yacht’s 468-foot-long hull is made primarily with steel, but it also incorporates carbon fiber to keep the superstructure’s overall weight down.

The yacht has eight decks, a helicopter pad, a huge pool, and an underwater observation area. It is powered by a “hybrid diesel-electric package with controllable pitch propellers,” and is designed to accommodate 20 guests and a crew of 54. Each diesel engine produces 4,800 horsepower, while the two electric motors are rated at 4300 kWh each. Due to its size, Sailing Yacht A has a cruising speed of 18 miles per hour and has a maximum speed of 24 mph.

All of the latest products and processes for marine composites manufacturing will be on display in the CAMX Exhibit Hall! For more information, visit http://camx17.mapyourshow.com.
