CONFERENCE CONTENT | GM KEYNOTE
CAMX officially kicked off with a keynote address from Dr. J. Gary Smyth, Executive Director and Global Research & Development at General Motors. Dr Smyth’s presentation included a high-level perspective on transformational changes in the automotive industry and included what GM has learned about composites from the evolution of the Corvette.

Pre-conference Monday included overview sessions and tutorials towards ACMA’s Composites Technician Certificate (CCT), the industry’s gold standard for composites training. An attendee noted, experts and peers. “I work in Hawaii, where there isn’t a lot of high-tech industry,” he says. “At CAMX, I am surrounded by people creating other high-tech applications with composites. So I hope to find answers for the few problems we face over and over again.”

The 335,000 sq. ft. Exhibit Hall opened today, featuring 550+ exhibitors from more than 20 countries. In the Exhibit Hall, attendees have the opportunity to learn about exciting new product developments and network with fellow industry professionals.

A three day series of Featured Sessions began today, focusing on trends and exciting new opportunities for the industry, including topics that bridge low-cost/high-volume materials with high-performance/low-volume materials.
AWARDS & ACCOLADES | CAMX COMBINED STRENGTH AWARD
The CAMX Combined Strength Award went to Cincinnati Incorporated for Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) technology that creates 3-D large-scale products up to 10 times larger than currently producible, and at speeds 200 to 500 times faster than existing additive machines.

The Unsurpassed Innovation Award went to Continental Structural Plastics (CSP) for its TCA Ultra Lite, a Class A Body Panel material that GM recently used to cut weight from the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette. As automakers continue to seek material solutions for increasingly demanding fuel efficiency standards, materials such as TCA Ultra Lite set a high standard.

Attendees gathered as SAMPE honored volunteers and Best in Track paper winners. They were also treated to a special presentation by Mark Goulthorpe, Associate Professor of MIT’s Department of Architecture. Having organized a part of the SOLVE initiateve at MIT, devoted to FUEL, CURE, LEARN, and MAKE, Prof. Goulthorpe provided a synopsis of the broad challenges faced by “makers” as we look at the (near) horizon of massively increased demand for material goods, especially as applied to buildings.
