CAMX 2016 Exhibitor Previews: Part 2
CAMX, in its third year, is growing and expanding, and the quantity and quality of new products and technologies being introduced at the show is impressive. CAMX Connection asked exhibitors to tell us about the products they will feature, and the response has been tremendous. This week features Part 2 of 2 of the CAMX 2016 Exhibitor Previews. More.
Composites Get in the Game – Evan Milberg
Last week, the 2016 NFL season kicked off with the Denver Broncos taking on the Carolina Panthers in a rematch from Super Bowl 50. During that Super Bowl, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis became the first NFL player to use a 3-D printed brace in a game. The brace was made with a plastic and elastomer composite and was printed by technology from 3-D printing specialist and CAMX 2016 exhibitor Stratasys for 30 hours after scanning Davis’ arm.
Stratasys is just one of a number of composite industry players who have made an impact on the sports and recreation market. No matter the sport, athletes are looking for a competitive edge with equipment that is strong, lightweight, and durable.
In last month’s Olympic Games in Rio, you could find composite innovation on display in a wide range of sports, including composite recurve bows in archery, lightweight hulls on rowing boats, golf clubs and field hockey sticks made with CFRP, gymnastics uneven bars made with fiberglass, and non-slip composite starting blocks in swimming. Another CAMX 2016 exhibitor, TeXtreme, lent its carbon fiber to a manufacturer of high-performance Olympic racing bikes. Composites also made their way to the 2016 Paralympics, as BMW made headlines with its customized carbon fiber racing wheelchairs.
If you’ve ever wanted to see how high-end sporting equipment is made, CAMX 2016 will be the perfect opportunity. Inside Composite One’s Lean Mean Molding Machine (booth P22), engineers will make skateboards using silicone bag molding and carbon fiber reinforced with Polynt Composites’ Core Shell Rubber-Modified Vinyl Ester resin.
However, composites in sports extend far beyond equipment in the games. They also are used to make the venues where the games happen. Composite panels served as the base for the restoration of an historic mosaic at the entrance to Rio’s Maracanã stadium. Fiberglass-based tensile roofs covered portions of the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasilia and Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, two of the venues to host Olympic soccer. And last year, as part of the 1060 project, CAMX 2016 exhibitor DowAksa signed an agreement with the Chicago Cubs to help restore and preserve Wrigley Field with DowAksa CarbonWrap, the industry’s original CFRP system.
